Why your iPhone photos are HEIC
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhone since iOS 11, released in 2017. It stores a photo using the HEVC video codec instead of the older JPEG codec, which typically cuts file size roughly in half at the same visual quality. For Apple, that means faster iCloud backups and more photos fitting in the same storage space.
The tradeoff is compatibility. HEIC is an Apple-preferred format, and many programs, websites, and older devices outside the Apple ecosystem were never built to open it. JPG, by contrast, is a decades-old standard that opens everywhere — which is why converting HEIC to JPG is often the fastest way to share or upload an iPhone photo without it failing to open.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
Windows File Explorer does not preview or open HEIC files out of the box. Microsoft sells "HEIF Image Extensions" and "HEVC Video Extensions" in the Microsoft Store to add support, but installing them takes a few steps, sometimes costs a small fee, and still will not make HEIC work in every older program or web form — it only adds support to File Explorer and a handful of built-in apps.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce image quality?
Converting always involves re-encoding the image, so some quality loss is unavoidable. heicly uses a default quality setting of 90 out of 100, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for almost every photo. In single-file mode, you can adjust the quality slider and re-download at a different setting without re-processing the original file.
